{"id":229,"date":"2007-09-17T19:50:49","date_gmt":"2007-09-17T18:50:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bearlybeaded.co.uk\/blog\/?p=229"},"modified":"2007-09-17T19:50:49","modified_gmt":"2007-09-17T18:50:49","slug":"british-museum-and-sound-of-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bearlybeaded.co.uk\/blog\/?p=229","title":{"rendered":"British Museum and Sound of Music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of the birthday\/anniversary celebrations, Mum and Dad got tickets to go and see the Sound of Music on the West End.\u00c2\u00a0 They bought tickets for me and Rob as well and for our grandparents (Dad&#8217;s side), and we arranged that we&#8217;d all meet in London at <a title=\"Link to the Dorchester hotel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thedorchester.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Dorchester<\/a> for\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Link to the Dorchester hotel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thedorchester.com\/restaurants_bars\/promenade.html\" target=\"_blank\">Afternoon Tea<\/a> today.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0My grandparents\u00c2\u00a0live in Harpenden (near London) so Rob came down to Nottingham on Saturday, and we both drove to Harpenden yesterday to visit them and catch up with the family news (Rob in Sheffield would be the most northern member of the family &#8211; I think), as they&#8217;ve kindly offered to put us up.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So\u00c2\u00a0myself and Rob\u00c2\u00a0caught the train into London around lunchtime, as we thought we&#8217;d like to visit the <a title=\"Link to the British Museum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">British Museum<\/a> before meeting with everyone else.\u00c2\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t stand a chance of getting to see the <a title=\"Link to the British Museum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/whats_on\/all_current_exhibitions\/the_first_emperor.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Terracotta Warriors<\/a>, as we&#8217;d made the decision to visit the museum too late to get tickets for today, but there was still plenty to see.\u00c2\u00a0 We picked up the audio tour of the highlights of the museum, and only got through about 8 of the 40 or so items before our time there was up!\u00c2\u00a0 We did manage to see the <a title=\"Link to the British Museum website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/explore\/highlights\/highlight_objects\/aes\/t\/the_rosetta_stone.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Rosetta Stone<\/a>, the marbles from the <a title=\"Link to the British Museum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/explore\/galleries\/ancient_greece_and_rome\/rooms_18,_18a,_18b_parthenon.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Parthenon<\/a>, and the items from the <a title=\"Link to the British Museum website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/explore\/online_tours\/britain\/our_top_ten_british_treasures\/the_sutton_hoo_ship-burial.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Sutton Hoo ship-burial<\/a>, as well as a range of <a title=\"Link to the British Museum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/explore\/galleries\/ancient_egypt\/room_4_egyptian_sculpture.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Egyptian\u00c2\u00a0sculpture<\/a> and some Assyrian <a title=\"Link to the British Museum website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/explore\/galleries\/middle_east\/room_6_assyrian_sculpture.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">sculpture<\/a> and <a title=\"Link to the British Museum website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/explore\/galleries\/middle_east\/room_7-8_assyria_nimrud.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">friezes<\/a> which I <em>loved<\/em> and made Rob spend a long time looking at while I took stacks of reference photos.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Link to the British Museum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/explore\/galleries\/ancient_greece_and_rome\/room_17_nereid_monument.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image225\" height=\"200\" alt=\"Nereid Monument\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bearlybeaded.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/10\/pict0104-small.jpg\" \/><\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Link to British Museum website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/explore\/highlights\/highlight_objects\/aes\/c\/colossal_granite_head_of_amenh.aspx\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image226\" height=\"200\" alt=\"Head of Amenhotep\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bearlybeaded.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/10\/pict0080-small.jpg\" \/><\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Link to the British Museum website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/explore\/galleries\/middle_east\/room_7-8_assyria_nimrud.aspx\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image227\" height=\"200\" alt=\"Assyrian frieze\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bearlybeaded.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/10\/pict0029-small.jpg\" \/><\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Link to the British Museum website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/explore\/highlights\/highlight_objects\/pe_mla\/g\/gold_belt_buckle_from_the_ship.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image228\" height=\"200\" alt=\"Belt buckle from the Sutton Hoo ship-burial\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bearlybeaded.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/10\/pict0115-small.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We then hurried to the Dorchester to meet the rest of the family (we&#8217;ve got to go back to the museum though &#8211; still so much to see!), where we felt very posh as we enjoyed Afternoon Tea in the <a title=\"Link to the Dorchester hotel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thedorchester.com\/restaurants_bars\/promenade.html\" target=\"_blank\">Promenade<\/a>, before heading to the London Palladium for <a title=\"Link to the Sound of Music London website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.soundofmusiclondon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Sound of Music<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0&#8211;
